Who are we?

The Geological Society of Uganda is a dynamic organization dedicated to advancing the study and practice of the Earth Sciences, with a particular focus on Uganda. Our mission is to foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing among earth scientists and members of society to harness the benefits of geological research for the greater good.

Founded on the principles of promoting, encouraging, and preserving the study of earth sciences in Uganda, our society is driven by a collective vision to enrich our understanding of Uganda’s geological landscape and its significance to society. We believe in the transformative power of scientific inquiry and strive to facilitate the exchange of ideas and expertise to address pressing challenges and opportunities in our field.

With a keen focus on functions such as climate change, environmental conservation, and earth sciences, we are committed to promoting sustainable practices, mitigating environmental risks, and advancing geological knowledge for the betterment of Ugandan communities and beyond.

Mission

To encourage and promote the study and practice of the Earth Sciences, facilitating the exchange of ideas between members of the society for the benefit of the science and the people whom the science can serve.

Vision

To maintain a high standard of professional conduct on the part of its members; provide the public with means to recognize adequately trained and professional earth scientists; and advance the professional wellbeing of its members through conducting certifying professional training and issuing certifications to its qualified members

OBJECTIVES OF THE SOCIETY

  • Arranging and sponsoring lectures, seminars, colloquia, symposia and excursions, holding meetings of the Society for reading and discussing communications in order to disseminate objective information and analysis concerning such aspects of geology.
  • Encouraging the publication of suitable research material principally through the medium of its newsletter/journal and to co-operate with
    Research Institutions, Universities and Individuals in promoting scientific research into geology among the Society Members
  • Maintaining liaison with geological and allied institutions both within/outside Uganda, studying problems relating to such aspects of geology at the National level and possible solutions to these problems and offering technical assistance and advice on problems related to Earth Science
  • Uphold professional standards and ethics as contained in the Code of Professional Conduct of the Society through maintaining dignity and upholding ethics of geological activities
  • Promoting and advocating for the interests and welfare of its members at their places of work through advising, supporting or acting for any Society Member having problems related to his/her profession and fostering a mutual respect, understanding and co-operation between the Society members and the government through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development
  • Offering career assistance to and encouraging potential university students and graduates in preparing for a career in geology through co-operating with Universities, other educational Institutions and public educational authorities for the furtherance of education and training in earth sciences and practice
  • The Society shall be registered as a legal entity and shall remain non-political.
  • To assist in carrying out resource exploration which is being conducted to identify and evaluate natural resources such as minerals, fossils fuel and among others
  • To assist in carrying out environmental assessments in assessing the environmental impact of various projects including construction, mining and infrastructure development by understanding the geology of an area, geologists can identify potential environmental risks such as groundwater contamination, soil instability or the presence of hazardous materials.
  • To do all other things incidental or conducive to the attainment of the above objects or any of them.
